OPENING
Lion President Bill Sturgeon opened the meeting at 12:30pm by introducing Lion PP Jerry Hollingsworth, our songmaster, who lead the Lions in a very patriotic song. It was great to see Lion Jerry back after a short one week absence due to a recent fall that resulted in a shoulder fracture. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lion PP Bruno Cirello. Prayer & Invocation was recited by Lion Treasurer Paul Tremblay. Inspirational Helen Keller Quote was given by Lion PP Walt Simmons “Everyday has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn whatever state I am in, therein to be content.”

Lion IPP Don Anthony introduced visiting Lion Garry Jones from the Spring Valley Lions Club and Lion PP George Hurst introduced his good friend Lee Knutson who is running for the Grossmont District Board.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Lion PP Dick Rogers gave the following updates and announcements: Ranch Catering will continue to provide our tasty & well received luncheon. Lion PP Ron Snow has graciously offered to store our Lions Float Vehicle at his secure business location “Free of Charge” (saving our Lions $500 for vehicle storage fees)—Thanks so much Lion Ron! Storage Unit for our Lions materials will stay at the same price of $1227 per year—a Special Thanks for our 9 Lions who have pledged $100 each to defray this cost. We are still hoping 3 additional Lions will pledge to defray costs. Camp Jack was featured in the August 16-22nd East County Herald with two great photos of Lion PP Ray Hackworth and Lion PP Bob Moreau with some of the 150 disadvantaged youth who had a great camping & fishing experience! Jean Roelof, wife of Lion PP Jim Roelof, passed away on April 25th. Memorial Services will be held at the El Cajon Mortuary on August 24th at 2pm to honor her life. Lion Jim Roelof served as our Club President from 1951-1952.
Lion Treasurer Paul Tremblay announced that the new 2013 Entertainment Books are available and on sale for only $40.
Lion President Bill Sturgeon encouraged all fellow Lions to “wear your Lion Vests and Hats” next meeting (last Monday of each month for wearing vests and first Monday of each month for wearing your Lions Hat/Cap). Also, “WE WILL BE DARK!” no Lions Meeting on Monday September 3rd Labor Day National Holiday.
VP REPORTS
3rd VP Report Ray Ridlon (excused absence). Padre Tickets for September 27th Padres vs. LA Dodgers are on sale for $22.00 (includes a free hot dog and soda). This game will be a great way to be with your family & Lion friends and to showcase the El Cajon Valley Host Lions in our community!
2nd VP Mercy Walters had Lion Van Willsey report on the Adopt a Street project that was held this past Saturday August 18th. Lion Van Willsey and Lion Mike Wasyliw teamed up in the early morning heat to clean up a large stretch of streets on Main Street. This project really “builds character & humility” and is “great for the soul!”
1st VP Kiley Grunstad (excused absence—out of town training field agents). Two kids from the Camp Jack Program were referred for vision screening and possible eyeglasses.

Lion PP Gary Sims, Twisted Plenty of Tails and collected the following Happy Dollars & Happy Fines: Lion PP Walt Simmons Happy $5 for his Happy to Be Here with fellow Lions & to share his computer joke. Lion President Bill Sturgeon Happy $20 for sharing a joke and great ball games this week and being on 3 baseball teams. Lion 3rd VP Mercy Walters Happy $5 for forgetting to ask “How Many Earl?”. Lion Mike Raney Happy $5 for being here and back to school teaching pretty soon. Lion Roy “Rocco” Collura Happy $5 for a great ball game this past week & going “2 for 4!”. Lion PP George Hurst Happy $5 fine for extra long political introduction of his friend Lee Knutson. Lion Paul Walters Happy $5 for a pilgrimage to see the miraculous Namacpacan Virgin Mary of Luna (Luna is hometown of Lion 3rd VP Mercy Walters). Lion Van Willsey Happy $5… for his regrets on a comment made. Lion PP Phil Smith commented ‘’gentle ribbing/ratted” on Lion PP Ron Snow for his vacation trip. Lion PP Ron Snow Happy $20 for his fabulous vacation to San Juan Islands off Washington State—seeing incredible beauty and nature on Lion Tom Angus’ 74 ft. boat. Lion Felina Balisteri Happy $5 for being here at Lions meeting whenever she can make it.
SPEAKERS
Lion PP George Hurst, Speakers Program Chair, introduced Jim Gill, Director of Communications/PR at General Dynamics NASSCO and Mary Montgomery. Jim’s lively presentation gave an overview of NASSCO, its hub in San Diego, strong employee driven focus and a great Safety Program “safest shipyard in America”. NASSCO’s primary services include shipbuilding, ship repair and Industrial Manufacturing for the military.
