PROGRAM:

Jordan Miles from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

The AFSP is the largest funder for suicide prevention and research.

They are working on getting a barricade along the Coronado Bridge to cut down on suicides.  Suicide is a complex mental health issue and deserves extensive attention. Involved are health factors and historical factors (known family/friend who committed suicide).  Over 700,000 die by suicide each year, worldwide.  In 2021 over 48,000 died in the US alone.

If you recognize signs of suicide in someone, talk to them to determine their behavioral patterns/reach out to a person you expect is in crisis but don’t offer advice on how to fix their issues, that is better left to professionals.

988 is the Suicide Crisis hotline – to be used in the prevention stage.  741741 is the texting option.

911 Emergency if there is an immediate crisis occurring.

WINNER OF ATTENDANCE DRAWING: Warren McKenna $20

WINNER OF OPPORTUNITY DRAWING: Nick Forchette $37 – donated $20 to City of Hope

TODAY’S RIB-TICKLER:

Don’t bother walking a mile in my shoes, that would be boring.  Spend 30 seconds in my head, that’ll freak you right out!

ATTENDANCE IS THE PRICE OF MEMBERSHIP

“WE SERVE”

The motto of LCI President Dr. Patti Hill “Changing the World”

HK Quote:

Guests:  None although Prez Ray was trying to get Lion Mike Carleton to introduce his guest since Lion Aaron George was sitting next to him…..Hmmmmmm!!!

Speaker:  We’re not having much luck in this area as last week the Mayor was to speak and he did show up – on Tuesday!  Today’s speaker was going to give a talk on “What Your Brain Can Do For You” but apparently she forgot!  I think this calls for another Hmmmm!

Communications/Announcements:

We can do the Summer Healthcare event at Grossmont Hospital as we are dealing with eyeglasses.

Lion Cathy Bailes has sold out on her Padre fundraiser tickets for Saturday’s drawing.  Winchester Widows are having a pancake breakfast fund raiser at the Santee-Lakeside Elks Lodge #2698 on Sun August 2nd – please support them with their fundraiser.

PP Lion Mercy presented Lions Year 2014-2015 LCI 100% Attendance Pins to PP Lion Jerry Hollingsworth, PP Lion Ray Hackworth, Lion Frank Galkowski, Treasurer Lion Paul Tremblay, Secretary Lion Paul Walters, and PP Lion Mercy herself.  Good job Lions!  Remember “Attendance is the price of Membership”.

PDG Lion Len Blottin continues to push the Heart of Mt Helix fundraiser on August 15, 2015.  Tickets are $50 pp to attend.  If you wish to be seated, it’s $100 pp and a table of 10 is a total of $1,000.  Contact PDG Len if you are interested in attending.

Birthdays:         N/A

VP Reports:

3rd VP-Lion Dave Huntamer report expertly given by PP Lion Don Anthony. Visitation Chair Mike Wasyliw was called upon to explain what visitations are and why it’s fun and interesting to participate in them…meet other Lions in the District and see how other meetings are run. August 21st Padre Night has 42 signed up.  Meet at the Crow’s Nest on the 2nd floor of McCormack & Schmidt’s Restaurant for a ‘free’ hamburger and a no-host bar.  August 8th Picnic– several healthy Lions signed up for an early set-up of hay bales and horseshoes.

2nd VP-Lion Felina Balistreri.  Lion Chris Bramwell announced the Eyeglass Program is going well and the committee recently met and now will meet with Dr. Patel.  Additionally, where the ‘travelling’ SPOT machine goes next will be approved by the Board at their August 12th meeting.

1st VP-Lion Van Willsey.  Lion Don Anthony is working on the tickets for our annual pancake breakfast fundraiser, and they should be available in the first part of Sept.. The band has been booked.  Lion Warren McKenna has been authorized by the Board to spiffy up our website which is currently in poor condition and nowhere near current at this time.  Lion Warren needs feedback from members on what you want to see on the website and what you may not care about seeing.  Constructive feedback will be appreciated and is needed in order to get the site ‘friendly’ to members and non-members alike.

Other:  PP Lion Ray Hackworth shared a “Jewish Quarterback Story” and this writer didn’t notice that he paid a fine for it even though it was received with many Boo’s.

Happy $’s:  PP Lion Bob Acker was the ‘hatchet-man’ today and harped a lot on the missing bell…Prez Lion Ray quoted Article 23 from the LCI Constitution that once the bell rings to end the meeting the Lion Tamers are responsible for the safekeeping of the bell until it is to be used next and thusly our Lion Tamers were blamed.  For whatever reason Lion Dick Nasif and TT Lion Bob Acker have agreed to solve the issue promising that the bell will be missing for at least 2 weeks.  PDG Lion Len tried to help by explaining the difference between a regular club meeting and one where visitors are present but to no avail-nice try PDG Len!

Secretary Lion Paul paid a Happy $ because Lion Christian paid his bill.  PP Lion Tom Normandie paid for something, but I could not hear what (sorry).  PP Roger Stebleton apparently doesn’t have a Lions license frame on the front of his car – $2 fine.  PP Lion Tom Hoban gave a Happy $100  for a trip to Cabo…in his new 6-figure 47′ boat AND a new Lexus.  Lion Mike Raney $10 for an upcoming trip and ‘glad to be here’.  Webmaster Lion Warren attended a Padre game with Lion Bob and Susan Acker AND Lion Bob bought him dinner.  Lion Henry Coleman for missing a couple of meetings $10.  Lion Mike Wasyliw is happy cuz PP Lion Yvonne Paris is helping with the newsletter.  Lion Aaron George for forgetting his Lions pin $15.  PP Lion Walt Simmons $5 for the great rain we’ve had.  Lion Ron Black for something that had to do with the bell missing since just after the 1st meeting.  PP Lion Dick Rogers $20 for his part-time job at Dinosaur National Park – counting bones.  PP Lion Ray Hackworth $20 for a photo of him dancing with a beautiful blonde this past weekend – and at an Elks Lodge no less!  Prez Lion Ray had guests from Scotland, and they all went to Hearst Castle for a fun time (he has the exempt badge).

                                                                                                                                                                                                >

Attendance Drawing & Closing Remarks:

Lion Aaron George gracefully plucked the name of PP Lion Bill Sturgeon from the ‘bag of names’ and PP Bill graciously donated the $40 to the City of Hope.  PP Lion George Hurst will be having back surgery soon so keep him in your prayers.

And don’t forget ATTENDANCE IS THE PRICE OF MEMBERSHIP!

Upcoming Programs:               We will be having a lottery on who may be scheduled next
