PROGRAM:

VALLEY TWIRLERS – Debbie and Paul Andreen

Debbie and Paul shared that square dancing is a traditional American dance.  It is performed in multiples of 8 (4 couples make a square).  A ‘caller’ determines which combinations of moves will be made within the square/the entirety of squares participating.  Calls get more complicated as you progress in this dance form.  There are about 50 basic calls and most know about 100 calls which is Plus Dancing.  To be a Plus Dancer would only take about 9 months to become proficient.

There are 18 square dance groups in San Diego.  The Valley Twirlers meet every Tuesday evening at Bostonia Recreation Center, 1049 Bostonia St.  Class time is 6:30-8 PM then from 8-9 PM is Plus Dancing.  Cost is $5 per person, ages 8 to adult.

You don’t need any partner or special attire.

Interestingly, all square-dancing calls are in English around the world.  The Valley Twirlers Square Dance Club’s Caller/Instructor is Steve Moore.  Contact Debbie or Paul at 619/499-5379.
