OPENING

Lion President Mercy Walters opened the meeting at 12:30pm and announced that this month is “Military Appreciation Month”.  Lion PP Jerry Hollingsworth, Songmaster, led our fellow Lions and guests in singing “You’re a Grand ole Flag!” Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lion Captain Jeff Arvan. Prayer & Invocation was recited by IPP Kiley Grunstad. Helen Keller Quote of the Week was inspirationally given by Lion Carter Short.

GUESTS

IPP Kiley Grunstad introduced and welcomed our three guests: Lion Carl Larson from the Santee Lions and Lesa Mitchell & Samantha Oleson from the Boys & Girls Club of East County.

COMMUNICATIONS/CORRESPONDENCE/ANNOUNCEMENTS, ETC.

Lion Secretary Paul Walters reported that our next Board Meeting will be this Wednesday May 13th at 6pm at the office of PDG Len Blottin. We will be DARK on Monday May 25th to celebrate Memorial Day. Lion Carter Short, Flag Day Chair, announced the upcoming Friday June 12th Flag Day Ceremony at Madison Elementary School with 2 sessions at 8:15 am and 9:30am—all fellow Lions are encouraged to attend with Lion Carter.

Student Speaker Contest Camden Stableton from Riverview Charter School in Lakeside Ca was the winner at the MD Area Level Contest on May 9th in Redlands and will be competing at the top  level Multiple District Four Contest in San Jose, Ca. Good Luck Camden Stableton—representing East County’s Finest Student Speaker!

Lion Dan Garrett thanked all fellow Lions who attended the Salvation Army Golf Tournament on April 29th at Sycuan that raised over $10,000.00 for their new building fund.

All incoming ECVH Lions officers & board members & fellow Lions are invited to attend “Lions Learning Day” on Saturday June 13th from 8am to noon @ Kaplan College 2022 University Dr. Vista, Ca. Contact Lion Secretary Paul Walters for info to sign up.

Hot off the press East County Gazette May 7-13th issue featured a front page story of our El Cajon Lions Foundation annual donations of  $38,844.00 on April 28th to 5 worthy non profit organizations–another outstanding job by PP Dick Rogers, Publicity Chair, for getting the great news out to our community!

VP REPORTS

3rd VP Roy “Rocco” Collura, absent. Lion PP Don Anthony covered the reports with Lion PP Ron Paris announcing Steak Fry on Friday June 6th at the Hoban Ranch—all Lions & wives & significant’s are invited. Signup sheets are on the table or contact Lion Ron to RSVP. Lion Warren McKenna gave an update on the Padres Night on August 21st base ball game with Padres vs. St. Louis. Tickets are only $25.00 and includes a pre-game get together for a burger & beer at McCormack & Schmidt’s Restaurant followed by an out the door escalator ride to the ball park!

2nd VP Van Willsey, absent. Adopt a Street Community Cleanup is postponed till month of June.

1st VP Ray Ridlon, absent, on vacation. Casino Night tickets are available to check out with Lion Treasurer Paul Tremblay. Next Casino Night Planning Meeting will be on Wednesday May 27th 5:30 pm at the office of PP Tom Hoban—all fellow Lions are invited to attend and share their ideas on how to make this a very successful fundraising event!

HAPPY DOLLARS

Lion Tail Twister Bob Acker collected the following Happy Dollars & Happy Fines: A bottle of premium Brandy with 2 sniffer glasses were donated for auction by PP Ray Hackworth with the winning bid to PP George Hurst for $50 bucks! Lion PP Phil Smith was back in town and was asked to pay up for his vacation adventures—10 days to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands & 8 days in God’s Country “Yosemite Valley”—Lion Phil generously gave a Happy $100 bucks! Lion IPP Kiley Grunstad was also asked to pay up for his company paid “high performer bonus” vacation to Portugal & the Canary Islands—Lion Kiley reported that wherever he went he was promoting our/the Lions and gave a Happy $100 bucks! Lion PP Gary Robinson gave a Happy $25.00 and said he was very impressed with Lion Phil’s & Lion Kiley’s vacation adventures and hopes he can likewise experience some upcoming vacation adventures! Lion Ron Black gave a Happy $1.00! Lion Paul Walters gave a Happy $5 with a proud to be there at the El Cajon Police Awards Ceremony! Lion Treasurer Paul Tremblay gave a Happy $5 for a good time visit to his mother who is 94 years young! Lion Bob Acker, “fisherman & gun enthusiast extra-ordinaire” gave some Happy Dollars for a great Ducks Unlimited Dinner that included a group of “Wounded Warriors” who each left with a quality gun or shotgun—25 beautiful shotguns or guns were distributed at this year’s fundraiser dinner!

SPEAKERS

Lion PP George Hurst “back in the saddle Speakers Chair”, introduced our guest speakers Lesa Mitchell and Samantha Oleson from the Boys & Girls Club of East County. Lesa has been the Director of Development for the Boys & Girls Club for the past 23 years and 21 years as an El Cajon Valley Host Lions member. A Special Thanks was given by Ms. Mitchell to the El Cajon Valley Lions Foundation for establishing a PP Trent Huls Scholarship Fund at the Boys & Girls Club of East County. This year’s Lions donation of $5,000 allows 106 kids & teens 5-18 years of age free scholarships to the Boys & Girls Club House program. The Boys & Girls Club has had a strong & lasting positive relationship with the ECVH Lions since its beginnings 54 years ago in El Cajon!

ATTENDANCE DRAWING & CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENTS

Attendance Drawing Winner was Lion Mike Wasyliw who donated the proceeds to the City of Hope fund.

June 8th Lions Meeting at noon is planned to be held at the El Cajon Police Department which will include a guided tour of the facility.

Lions will not meet on May 25th which will be the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend Celebration.

Good to see Lion PP Don Anthony back after a very short absence. Lion Don mentioned he got a nice “we miss you” greeting card from PP Ray Hackworth!

Sell, Sell, Sell our tickets & sponsorships to our Gunsmoke V Casino Night on June 13th. To date ticket sales & sponsorships total $5,800 and we are shooting for raising $58,000+
