PROGRAM:

Michael Hirman – Sons of the American Revolution, PP & current VP of the San Diego Chapter and Immediate Past Chancellor of the CA Society of SAR.

Michael presented wearing the costume of an American Revolutionary Patriot and brought his 1777-model musket which is a 69 Kaliber rifle.  It was the standard gun of the British Army, but this model was given to the Patriots by the French.

To become a member of the SAR you need an ancestor who fought in the American Revolution. The San Diego Chapter of SAR was founded in 1894 and is the oldest, active chapter in CA.  Their goal is to preserve the history of the American Revolution.  Helen Keller is his cousin, and 16 cousins were Presidents of the United States.  Michael’s oldest tie to the American Revolution was his great-grandfather Warner, born in 1746, who joined the Revolution in 1776. Warner ended up captured by the British and held captive on a slave ship until he escaped and returned to a ‘flying camp’ as a Patriot.  Another Great Grandfather fought as did a Cousin George.

Michael’s replica uniform is made of wool.

Carlsbad has a replica Green Dragon Tavern, the original of which in Boston brought in revolutionaries back ‘in the day’.  Canadians are American Torries who did not want to separate from the British.

Because the Spanish and Indians (Kumeyaay) helped support the revolution, there were many Patriots buried in San Diego near the old Mission/the Presidio.

The San Diego Chapter of SAR will do a July 4th celebration/re-enactment in 2026.
