PROGRAM:
Sharon Buetow from Guide Dogs for the Blind-GDBsandiegopuppyraisers@outlook.com
The program serves San Diego County, the main campus is in San Rafael and started with ‘youth-raisers’ via 4H. GDB keeps the puppies until they are 18 months old, and they use Lab, black, golden, and crosses. Their purpose is to socialize the puppies before handing them over to their visually impaired owners. The owners spend 4-8 weeks bonding and working with the dogs before becoming independent. The dogs are provided free of charge and the waiting list is about one year at this time.
The difference between GDB and other providers is GDB does not charge for the dog, and everyone is a volunteer. Sharon said some providers charge up to $20,000 for a guide dog.
Sharon said 57% of the puppies don’t make the cut to be a guide dog and those are donated to various organizations such as search and rescue.
Graduations are open to the public. They have a fundraiser on Oct. 20th in Poway at the Round Table Pizza. There will be an extensive silent auction and there will be 18 puppies in attendance.
GDB also has a facility in Oregon.
