Pearl Mecenas with 2 blind artisans
Pearl is the founder of GIFTED (Blind Artists Crafters Knitters) and has a strong business background. She got involved with the blind and visually impaired on a family visit to India. Pearl has been working with the Blind Community Center (Upas) where she met Joyce.
The GIFTED Foundation has USD as a community partner and USD is hosting a fundraiser for the foundation soon. The event is “Art in the Dark” with a suggested donation of $100. There will be an exhibit of the artisan’s work beginning this week in the Engineering Center at USD.
Joyce is a blind artisan, having lost her sight at 28 years old because of glaucoma affecting her optic nerves.
Jennifer’s optic nerves atrophied after surgery. She met Pearl at the Braille Institute while taking classes on various crafts and enjoys working on pottery.
