PROGRAM:  (Lion) Jose Cruz CEO San Diego Council on Literacy

Jose has been with this program for 38 years and loves it.  They create a culture where reading is important.  There are 33 agencies serving over 100,000 people and they received 20,000 books in July for distribution.

Thirty four % of 4th graders in the San Diego Union School District can’t read at grade level.  Typically lower rates of literacy are in the low income areas and relates directly to the parents inability to provide tutors to get the kiddos up-to-speed.  There is a science behind literacy.  The teachers need our help with the youngsters at pre-school age.

Lack of reading ability is access.  A free neighborhood library (exchange of books among and with others close-by) is very helpful to make books available to children and adults.

Thirty seven % of incarcerated individuals are at the lowest literacy rate.  Retention is better for reading the written page vs an audio book.  Since covid they have distributed 400,000 books and publishers are donating to them, all the Council has to do is pay for the shipping to receive them which is very expensive.  Our club has donated to the Council on Literacy in the past.

Some of the books, in other than the English language, must be purchased.  Again another reason for monetary donations.
