El Cajon Valley Host Lions

Lion President Kiley Grunstad opened the meeting with the ringing of the bell at 12:30pm. Lion PP Jerry Hollingsworth, Songmaster, exuberantly led our Lions in singing “You’re a grand ole flag!” Lion Ron Black proudly recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Lion Christian Willie gave a stirring Prayer & Invocation. Lion Jeff Winters inspirationally recited the Helen Keller Quote of the Week.


A nice Thank You Card was received from Rene Hoban thanking our Lions for their generous support of her recent fundraiser.

Foothills Church will be having a Golf Tournament in September to benefit their youth and after school programs. Heartland Lions White Cane Day will held on September 7th 11am-2pm at the San Diego Center for the Blind. Ticket cost of $10.00 that includes a tour of the center.

Lion PP Bruce Boorman announced and distributed tickets, flyers and posters for our 25th Annual Lions Pancake Breakfast & Bluegrass Music on Sunday October 27, 2013. Tickets will be mailed with our next newsletter for Lions who were not able to make the meeting today. New 2013-2014 Membership Rosters can be picked up at the front table.

Food Handler Training for our Lions Pancake Breakfast can be received at Cuyamaca College (Continuing Education)through the SD Dept. of Health, fee $6 includes certification.

Lion President Kiley Grunstad gave an update on upcoming Lions District 4L6 Yuma Convention on May 1-4th, 2013. President Kiley made a plea to have our Lions RSVP eight rooms ASAP at the Yuma Hilton Garden Inn at a special reduced rate of $84.00 per month. Close to a dozen Lions raised their hands to RSVP. Lion PP Tom Hoban generously offered to donate all the needed liquor refreshments and cost of our designated El Cajon Valley Host Lions Hospitality Room at the convention.


3rd VP Van Willsey reported that many of our Lions & Friends had an awesome time at the Padres Night on Friday August 17th. The seats were great and the pre-game get together at McCormack & Schmidt was a lot of fun. Thank You Lion Warren McKenna for getting us some excellent tickets and organizing the event!

Annual Lions Picnic will be held on Saturday October 5th at the home of Lion PP Bob Moreau. It will be a 2 day operation with digging and setting the pit a day ahead, firing the coals and letting the meat slowly cook for about 12 hours in the deep pit.

2nd VP Ray Ridlon, excused absence, returning from his summer long biking adventure and reporting back to Lions Duty on Saturday September 7th for our monthly Adopt –a-Street Community Cleanup meeting at Clifton Motors at 8am.

1st VP Mercy Walters, excused absence. Lion Paul Walters Co-Membership Committee Chair reported that the next Chamber of Commerce Breakfast will be on Friday September 6th. All Lions are invited to attend. Please RSVP with Lion Paul or 1st VP Mercy Walters. October 4th Chamber Meeting will feature a reserved El Cajon Valley Host Lions table that will feature poster displays of our various Lions activities and projects.

We need an all hands support of bringing our families, friends & business contacts at our upcoming Lions Pancake Breakfast on October 27th. Did you know that the small town of Sioux Falls Iowa Lions sold over 10,000 tickets for one of their pancake breakfast!


Lion Tail Twister, PP Bob Moreau, collected the following Happy Dollars & Happy Fines: Lion Christian Willie gave a Happy $5 for the upcoming Pancake Breakfast, announced that he sold 30 Pancake Breakfast tickets that he recently purchased and brought another 30 Pancake Breakfast tickets for friends and members of his congregation!! Lion PP Roger Stebleton gave a Happy $47 for 47 years of a happy marriage to his dear wife Pat! Lion PP Ron Paris gave a Happy $1 for the good showing of 39 Lions at our meeting today! Lion Aaron George gave a Happy $5 for a I’m so happy to be here! Lion Mike Raney gave a Happy $5 for his trip to Mexico where he had a ha ha terrible time! Lion PP Jerry Hollingsworth gave a Happy $55 for 55 happy years of marriage to his lovely wife Judy! Lion PP Tom Hoban gave a Happy $20 for just loving to see Lion Aaron George here today to pay us a visit!—and an extra $20 for a new motor home! Lion PP Gary Sims gave a Happy $20 for a nice trip to Lake Tahoe and upcoming 33rd Wedding Anniversary with Gail on September 7th and surviving a rafting trip on the American River! Lion Paul Walters gave a Happy $5 for the East Lake Chula Vista Little League Team! Lion President Kiley Grunstad gave a Happy $5 for the Chicago Bears—who played pretty good last week and the great time at the Lions Padres game! Lion PP Tom Hoban asked our Tail Twister to fine Lion Sharie Hoops for storage charges of Lion Sharie’s Tupperware Collection at his home—Lion Sharie paid the fine! Lion Roy Rocco Colura left a Happy $5 shortly after arriving and leaving for some important business! Lion Dr. David Keen reported that a Lion was cruising a high performance Mustang trying to blow out some carbon in downtown El Cajon and a Lion was road testing a (his) powerful V8 Mercedes! Lion Aaron George gave another Happy $5 for all the fun he was having at today’s Lions Meeting! Lion Felina Balistreri gave a Happy $5 for a happy to be here today!


Lion PP George Hurst introduced Agent Darla Schulte, Community Relations Officer from the Border Patrol. Agent Schulte shared the history of the Border Patrol, her story of apprehending 86 persons trying to illegally cross the border on one shift and the recent big busts and seizure of illegal drugs entering our country.


Attendance Drawing was won by Lion Earl Irey.

It was great to see Lion Aaron George at our meeting today—we hope you come back soon!

Always glad to see some of our Lions who are not able to make our meetings on a regular basis due to work & other commitments—Lion PP Floyd Sorenson, Lion Dr. David Keen, Lion Felina Balistreri—you are much appreciated!
