UPCOMING PROGRAMS:

May 22nd – Chris Rice, instructor at the Satellite Vocational High School in El Cajon.

PROGRAM:  Lisa Morand-Volunteer Coordinator, Kayleena Morand-dog handler/whisperer, Kara Messina-Development Manager…Guide Dogs of the Desert

Speaker Lisa said Guide Dogs of the Desert started in 1972.  Puppies are trained for the visually impaired.  Lions have been their partner since their beginnings.

The puppies go to a puppy-raiser when they are 8-12 weeks old then they are returned to the GDD facility when they are 18 months to 2 years old for formal training.

The dogs are trained to evacuate ‘on demand’ with the command “Get Busy”. This training requires that they eat on a schedule also.

Recipients of the Guide Dogs must be healthy and legally blind.  The recipients pay for their own transportation to the training facility and stay for 28 days, training with their dog from 6:30AM to 8PM daily.  Some in-home training is possible but very rare.

GDD is funded by donations and sponsorships.  It takes $5,000 to train a Guide Dog.
