PROGRAM:

Richard “Rich” Agundez Jr., 2022 El Cajon Citizen of the Year and hero of the 2001 Granite Hills High School shooting incident.

Rich was born and raised in Paradise Hills and graduated from Morse High School.  He loves his Harley among other hobbies, has 2 dogs, is single, is religious, and is happy with a great sense of humor.

Rich started out as a cadet with EC PD as he was too young to be a reserve officer at 19 years of age however at age 21, he applied for and was accepted, to the police department.  For 5 years he was a patrol officer on the night shift.  He had a work-related incident that turned his career around.  He graduated from the SWAT Academy and worked on ‘bikes’ issuing his share of tickets.  He then put in for ‘gangs’ but didn’t get that assignment so he was offered a new position working with “DARE”.  This became a life-changer for him personally as he loved working with the kids.  He then started the School Resource Officer (RSO) program, working at both El Cajon Valley HS and Granite Hills HS.  He was directly involved in the Active Shooter Program and helped at Santana HS after the shooting incident there, learning much from the chaos that ensued (early March 2001).

Rich became a volunteer coach at El Cajon Valley HS and has been a football coach at Grossmont HS since 2011.
