PROGRAM:

Lt. Crawford and Joe Alvarado

The drone is another name for an unmanned aerial system.  The program began in 2018 at ECPD, and its first mission was in 2019.  Their mission is to augment police officers in the field on a daily basis.  They have a Ford Van as their ‘fleet’.  Most of the drones are from China, and there are 3 sizes; the middle size is an M30.  An AVATA is for use indoors/small spaces.

Skydio X10s are coming, and they are made in the US.

The many uses for the drones are for building clearance, to pre-observe situations, to warn officers of what the situation is before they get there, and scene documentation, including video and audio, kept in a secure location for future use.  The drone also gives the fire department support by providing ‘big picture’ documentation.  Drones are First Responders that maximize efficiency.

The X 10s have a 25-minute charge time and 25-minute flight time, out to 2 ½ miles from home base.  They work on a 5G network.  Currently, all their drones are home-based in El Cajon at the PD but are hoping to expand to the fire department rooftops for better coverage.
