The City of El Cajon Manager Graham Mitchell and remaining City guests were speakers at this Town Hall Meeting on Homelessness.
The City’s policy objectives are to find permanent housing and integrity of neighborhoods.
Programs consist of permanent housing, outreach through partnerships, emergency shelters, and neighborhood preservation.
Since 2020 the results are impressive – 1092 have been permanently housed, 2472 have been given temporary shelter, and 874 tons of trash have been removed.
Negative issues are Police constraints, loss of local control, CA laws decriminalizing crimes, no-bail policies, County jail policies, and lack of prosecution.
There is no more “3-strikes” law.
El Cajon has been a hub for social services which automatically brings in more homeless population.
On average in San Diego County 46.7% of housing is categorized as “low”. Del Mar is the least affordable City for housing.
El Cajon has 3% of the County population but has 16% of the homeless population.
Solutions to our cities’ problems were discussed with many doable solutions voiced by members.
