OPENING

Lion President Kiley Grunstad enthusiastically opened our Lions meeting at 12:30pm with a well-attended group of 32 Lions and 8 guests. Lion President Kiley led our Lions & guests in singing “God Bless America!” Pledge of Allegiance was proudly led by Lion Dick Nasif. Prayer & Invocation was solemnly recited by Lion 1st VP Mercy Walters. Helen Keller Thought of the Week was inspirationally given by Lion Carter Short.

GUESTS

Lion President Kiley Grunstad introduced the following 9 guests: Catherine and Keith Bailes with their 3rd visit to our club (and filled out a Lions Application). We had 5 visiting Lions from the La Mesa Lions Club that included: President Dick Mellion, Mindy Jarvis, PP Mary Joe McDonald, PDG Rick Hamman and PP Marge Dyke. Our featured guest speaker this week was Beth McNellen and her husband Mr. McNellen.

La Mesa Lion President Dick Mellion announced their upcoming 3rd Annual Lion Lydia Spaghetti Dinner on Thursday May 8th at the La Mesa Community Center. For further info contact Lion Dick Mellien 619.517.7380 or rcmellien@cox.net.

Catherine Bailes, guest, announced the upcoming El Cajon Health & Safety Fair on Saturday May 3rd from 10am to 1pm sponsored by First Presbyterian’s Church Neighbor to Neighbor Program co -sponsored by the Springs of El Cajon 500 Farragut Circle.

COMMUNICATIONS/CORRESPONDENCE/ANNOUNCEMENTS, ETC.

Lion Secretary PP Gary Robinson announced that registration is still open (April 25th deadline) for the Lions District 4L6 Convention in Yuma Arizona on weekend of May 1-4, 2014. Our next Lions Board Meeting will be held on Tuesday May 6th at Nicolossi’s Restaurant at 6 pm. Next Gunsmoke IV Casino Night Planning Meeting will be held on Wednesday May 7th 6pm at Por Favor Restaurant on Main St in El Cajon. Our ECVH  Annual Lions Steak Fry will be held on May 31st at the  Hoban Ranch.

A Special Thanks to Lion PP Dick Rogers for the great publicity article in the East County Gazette that features our Lions Gunsmoke IV Casino Night.

Another Special Thanks to Lion PP Tom Hoban for covering the costs of our Lions Hospitality Rooms & Spirited Refreshments at upcoming May 1-4th District 4L6 Yuma Convention.

Membership Report was given by Lion Paul Walters who reported that Lion 3rd VP Van Willsey and Lion Carter Short will attend the upcoming 1st Friday East County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast.

VP REPORTS

3rd VP Van Willsey gave an update on our well attended Lions Visitations with next Visitation to the Lakeside Highway Lions on Tuesday April 22nd 6:30pm at Mimi’s Café on Mission Gorge Rd & Cuyamaca St in Santee. Thanks all, who support and are part of our dynamic  Visitations Team!

2nd VP Ray Ridlon, excused absence.

1st VP Mercy Walters gave an update on Gunsmoke Casino Night thanking PP Dick Rogers for the good PR in local newspapers. All is going well with music, food, entertainment and Lion Warren McKenna’s return from Kentucky with his special blends of spirits. Tickets sales are steadily growing and we are looking forward to a full house of our family of Lions and community friends. Two handsome Western Shirts were donated  by Wild Bill’s Western Store (via PP Ron Paris) and will be auctioned off at our Casino Night.

HAPPY DOLLARS

Lion Bob Acker, Tail Twister, did a fine job collecting the following Happy Dollars & Happy Dollar Fines: Lion Warren McKenna gave a Happy $5 (even though he had an Exempt Badge) for his visit to 6 Kentucky distilleries, purchase of a 2012 Hunyadi Sonata, bringing back 3 cases of Makers & Special Bourbon Blends for our Casino Night Special Refreshments and for his Padres that beat the Giants in 3 games! Lion Paul Walters gave a Happy $5 for our La Mesa Lions visitors and Cathy & Keith Bailes who submitted their Lions Membership Application!  Lion PP Walt Simmons gave a Happy $5 for purchase of a new laptop computer! Lion Mike Carleton gave a Happy $10 for a great week in Colorado chasing some wild turkey’s! Lion PP Dr. Mark Krause gave a Happy $50 for not being around for a bit and will be going to our Yuma Convention to help concoct his much needed tonic’s of Bloody Mary’s! Lion PP Mark Clifton gave a Happy $20 for a great trip to Yosemite and to visit his mother in Northern California! Lion PP Bruce Boorman gave a Happy $10 for being extremely happy that prez Kiley is not our leading resident songmaster and for a nice trip to visit daughter in Henderson Nevada for the Easter Holidays! Lion PDG Len Blottin gave a Happy $5 for his birthday party where he ended up being the designated driver for some of his guests! Lion PP Ray Hackworth gave a Happy $2 for his daughter who came by to celebrate his birthday at the Bali Hai where he picked up the tab for a $250 dinner! Lion PP Ray shared his Joke of the Week and got a thumbs down but got another Happy Birthday song for his birthday this month! Lion Carter Short gave a Happy $50 for his birthday today! Lion 1st VP Mercy Walters gave her weekly Happy $5 for her happy for no reason at all this week! Lion Van Willsey gave a Happy $5 and was asked if he was married yet and his Easter celebration to Anza with girl friend Diane! Guest Cathy Bailes gave a Happy $5 for her 3rd visit and a  wonderful to be here with her husband Keith! Lion Roy “Rocco” Collura gave a Happy $20 for actually going to church on Easter Sunday! Lion George Hurst gave a Happy $20 and proudly announced that on January 31st he officially retired from practicing law after 54 years and raising three great children who have become attorney’s!

SPEAKER

Lion President Kiley Grunstad introduced our guest speaker Beth McNellen who gave an uplifting presentation on “Sound of Your Voice Memoirs”. Beth and her husband help and encourage people to write their personal stories or memoirs that can be shared with family, friends, relatives and community. Did you know that Lion PP Dick Rogers has written his memoirs that are on the computer…we hope to hear and see more of the Rogers Memoir. Lion PP Ray Hackworth also talked about possibly writing his memoirs but has some challenges on writing his obituary…which, I believe,  is a great activity to see how we can leave our legacy for our Lions & loved ones! Did you also know that PP Ed Waymire is a published author on his passion for poetry.  Mrs. McNellen explained her recommended process of writing a memoir which included starting with an outline first, meeting 1 hour per week for 6 sessions to be on the road to creating your own memoir.

ATTENDANCE DRAWING & CLOSING THOUGHTS

Attendance Drawing winner was Lion Sharie Hoops who donated her proceeds to the City of Hope.

It was good to see our noted guest celebrity Lion PP Dr. Mark Krause…we miss you and always appreciate your attendance.

Congrat’s to Lion PP George Hurst for your remarkable 54 years of law practice that started on January 6, 1960 until January 31st 2014!

Please keep Lion PP Dick Rogers and dear wife Elisabeth in your Thoughts & Prayers. Funeral services & Celebration of Life for their son Egon Vanderlee will be held this Saturday April 26th at 9am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church 13208 Lakeshore Drive in Lakeside, Ca. Your presence would be deeply appreciated.

And don’t forget that Lions Pin you wear on your collar represents that you belong to the greatest service organization in the world—the El Cajon Valley Host Lions Club!
