OPENING

Lion President Bill Sturgeon opened the meeting at 12:30pm. Plenty of Lions wore their Lions Caps to welcome back President Bill from his short absence–Glad to have you back! Lion PP Jerry Hollingsworth, Songmaster, led our Lions in singing “You’re a grand ole flag!” Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lion Mike and Cindy Buchanan. Prayer & Invocation was delivered by Captain Terry Masango from the Salvation Army. Inspirational Helen Keller Quote of the Week was given by Lion Earl Irey.

GUESTS

Lion IPP Don Anthony introduced our guest Sean Aguirre who was invited to our Lions Luncheon by Lion Warren McKenna.

ANNOUNCEMENTS & CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Lion PP Gary Robinson read the Lions International appeal for donations to the LCIF Typhoon Sally Disaster Relief Fund. Lions International has given an immediate donation of $100,000.00 toward the relief efforts. Lion PP Dick Rogers, Publicity Chair, distributed copies of the San Diego Herald which featured our Lions Annual Pancake Breakfast. Great photos were taken by Jay Renard/The East County Herald. See more photos at www.echerald.com. Lion Dick Rogers also gave an update on the upcoming Holiday/Christmas Party on Monday December 17th. Tickets will be sold at $35 and evening will feature music, clowning and a visit from Santa. Christmas Baskets will be assembled on December 22nd with Lion Roy “Rocco” Collura chairing the popular event. Lion IPP Don Anthony gave an update on the November 12th El Cajon Centennial Celebration & Parade that will feature our Lions Float—any Lions in uniform (shirt, vests, hats) are invited to walk and participate in the parade. Mother Goose Parade will be held on November 18th. Board Meeting will be held this Thursday November 8th at Lion 1st VP Kiley Grunstad’s Office 3855 Avocado Blvd in La Mesa. Save the date: December 14 & 15th Bell Ringing Lions for the Salvation Army Holiday Kettles—see Lion PP Jerry Hollingsworth if you would like to help. This year Kettle Drive will pit the El Cajon Valley Lions, the El Cajon Rotary and the Alpine Kiwanis to see who will raise the most money! Lions Joke of the Week was presented by Lion PP Ray Hackworth who gave us a good chuckle about the inebriated convert who was dunked a number of times for his baptism and asked have you found Jesus…replying…are you sure this is where he fell in! Captain Terry Masango mentioned that he looked forward to sharing the joke in one of his upcoming sermons. We were all happy to see the return of our President Bill Sturgeon from his two week absence playing World Series Baseball…but…it was recommended (a unanimous hand vote was taken) to have President Bill pay a $360 Happy Dollar Fine for “The first time in our Lions History that a Lions President did not show up at our Annual Pancake Breakfast!”

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Congratulations to the following Lions for Birthday’s in November: Lion PP Walt Simmons-November 12th, Lion Bob Acker-November 14th, Lion PP Dick Rogers-November 21st, Lion Felina Balistreri-November 24th.

EXEMPT BADGES

Lion President Bill Sturgeon and Lion 3rd VP Ray Ridlon were awarded the November Exempt Badges auctioned off for $40.00 each.

VP REPORTS

3rd VP Ray Ridlon gave a reminder to all Lions to support and participate in the City of El Cajon Centennial and upcoming Christmas Baskets Project. It’s good to see Lion Ray back into town after a short absence.

2nd VP Mercy Walters announced that there will not be an Adopt a Street Cleanup this month due to the busy Holiday Season. Our Lions “Hometown Day” Eyeglass event will be scheduled in December. Citizens of the Year update will be given by Lion Christian Willie at next meeting—please keep in mind any recommended distinguished Lions for the award.

1st VP Kiley Grunstad opened his report with: “How about those Bears!” & “How about those Aztec’s!” Lion Treasurer Paul Tremblay gave an update on our Lions Pancake Breakfast proceeds that netted $2600!

HAPPY DOLLARS

Lion PP Gary Sims collected the following Happy Dollars & Happy Fines: Lion Mike Carleton gave a Happy $5 glad to see the last day of this political crap & nasty campaigns! Lion President Bill auctioned off a “Bears Locker Room” sign for $50 awarded to Lion 1st VP Kiley Grunstad. Lion Earl Irey gave a Happy $20 for his visit to the presidential library. Lion Paul Tremblay gave a Happy $10 for the amazing Aztecs and his Temecula Wine Tasting Tour of 25 wineries with fellow Lions & friends. Lion IPP Don Anthony gave a Happy $10 for Aztec’s Football and Aztec’s Basketball! Lion PP Ron Paris gave a Happy $10 for a fun weekend in Temecula on the Wine Tasting Tour with assorted Lions & female friends! Lion Sharie Hoops gave a Happy $10 for a great weekend in Temecula Tasting Wine Tour! Lion Roy “Rocco” Collura gave a Happy $5 for his friend in Boise recovering from the Aztec’s football win and reminded Lions of our Lions upcoming Christmas Baskets Project. Lion PP Jerry Hollingsworth gave an “in advance donation” of a Happy $100 for the Lions Christmas Baskets. Lion PP Elmer Vierkant gave a Happy $10 for his new wheels car purchase.

SPEAKER

Lion PP & Speaker Program Chair George Hurst introduced the Speaker Captain Terry Masango from the Salvation Army. Captain Terry indicated that he felt the El Cajon Valley Lions would be the Salvation Army Bell Ringing Champions this year over the Rotary and the Alpine Kiwanis Clubs. Captain Masango gave a brief history of the Salvation Army founded in England in 1865 by William Booth who was an itinerant preacher, is in 125 countries, came to the United States in 1881 and today is considered one of the finest non profit helping organizations in the world. Over 1100 families are served in the East County area with a variety of services that include: a Nutrition Lunch Program, a Thrift Store, family enrichment programs, disaster relief services, etc.

ATTENDANCE DRAWING & CLOSING ANNOUNCEMETS

Attendance Drawing was won by Lion Paul Tremblay. Don’t forget that we will not meet on Monday November 12th in honor of Veterans Day & Celebrating the City of El Cajon’s 100 Years Centennial! And don’t forget that Lions Pin you wear on your collar represents that you belong to the greatest service organization in the world…The El Cajon Valley Host Lions Club “2011-2012 District 4L6 large Lions Club of the Year”.
