PROGRAM:

PDG Len spoke of his humble beginnings in Lionism.

Len was born in Richmond, VA.  He was adopted – twice.  His father was in the Navy and so the family moved to San Diego. Len’s mother was from here and her side of the family were pioneers San Diegans.  He grew up in Lemon Grove and joined the Navy upon graduation in 1958.  When he got out in 1962, he and Bucky married and had 2 boys.

Len began his business, SoCal Heating/A-C Supply, with only $6,000. His sons Lenny Jr and Jon worked in the business as youngsters, but Jon runs it now. Len’s wife Bucky was a District Governor 2 years before him while a member of the Heartland Lions Club. Len was the District Governor from 2004-2005.

He didn’t want to be in a service club as he thought it was all social.  His sponsor, Dan Harley, invited him to join El Cajon Valley Lions Club and upon becoming a member PP Bob Moreau asked him to chair the Christmas party.  Len’s youngest son Jon helped him get the party going which was a harbor dinner cruise.  Then PP Tom Normandie suggested he run for 3rd Vice President of the club and PP Jay Jacobson convinced him it was the right thing to do.

With that Len became the 50th President of the El Cajon Valley Lions Club.

Len is proud that we are 1 of 3 clubs in our district to have a foundation and that he was a member of the foundation board when it was initially funded by the Bob and Kay Hale Trust.
