OPENING

Lion 1st VP Kiley Grunstad ‘capably’ opened the meeting as Acting Lion President at 12:30pm. Lion President Bill Sturgeon was excused from the meeting—we hope to see him back next week. Lion PP Jerry Hollingsworth, Songmaster, led our Lions in singing “My Country Tis of Thee”. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lion Jim Sing. Prayer & Invocation was given by Lion 2nd VP Mercy Walters. Helen Keller Quote of the Week was inspirationally recited by Lion PDG Len Blottin.

GUESTS

Lion IPP Don Anthony introduced guest, Lion Mary Rynearson, candidate for 1st Vice District Governor. Lion Mary has enjoyed being your Second Vice District Governor from 2012-2013. Her motto is “Friends, Fellowship, and our Future in District 4-L6!”

ANNOUNCEMENTS & MAIL BAG CORRESPONDENCE

Lions Yuma Convention this weekend. Golf start at 11:45am with Friday May 3rd Core Cabinet Meeting starting at 5pm. International Luncheon on Saturday and Sunday vote on Lion candidates for 2013-2014 offices.

Lion Acting President encouraged all Lions to keep the City of Hopes Cans filled on a weekly basis. Lion Christian Willie gave a follow-up update on last month’s City of Hope Visitation. Lion Christian shared some of the incredible research that has found treatment cures for 9 different cancers. Our El Cajon Valley Host Lions Club represented the entire 4-L6 District at the City of Hope Visitation!

VP REPORTS

3rd VP Ray Ridlon gave an update on our Lions renewal filing status with the State of California.

2nd VP Mercy Walters reported that we had a good Adopt a Street Community Cleanup with 3 and a half Lions that included Lion PP Jerry Hollingsworth, Lion Paul Walters, Lion David Huntamer and his young lion cub son. Student Speaker Contest on April 27th was well attended with over 75 people in attendance. Thanks to the following El Cajon Valley Lions who attended and supported the event: Lion Paul Walters, Lion 2nd VP Mercy Walters and Lion Mike Wasyliw. There were 5 outstanding speakers with Aaron Dykstra from La Mesa winning the contest taking home a $4500 scholarship and competing in the next Area Speakers Contest on May 11th at the Brea Lions Scout Center.

1st VP Report Kiley Grunstad gave an update on our Lions Summer Escape Fundraiser Drawing. Sell those tickets! To date we have sold 40 tickets—close to reaching our breakeven point of 45 tickets and shooting for 100+ sales! We have letters for the May 31st fun raising drawing that you can send out to your friends and business associates in our community.

HAPPY DOLLARS

Lion PP Ray Hackworth kicked off our Happy Dollars with his Happy Joke of the Week that got a thumbs up! Lion PP Gary Sims collected the following Happy Dollars & Happy Fines: Lion 2nd VP Mercy Walters gave a Happy $5 for proudly wearing her Lions Vest. Lion Paul Tremblay gave a congratulatory Happy $5 for Lion PP Gary Robinson and his recent new job—we temporarily miss you Lion Gary! Lion Paul Walters gave a Happy $5 for the Adopt a Street Cleanup Crew! Lion IPP gave a Happy Dollar for being glad to see Lion PP Tom Normandie at today’s meeting—you have been missed and we hope to see you more often! Lion Christian Willie gave a Happy $5 for his visit with wife Reggie to see their grandson in LA—enjoying the Joys of Grandparenting! Visiting Lion Mary Rynearson gave a Happy $10 with a Happy to be here! Lion Earl Irey gave a “So Happy” $5 for having his wife Jennie back from the hospital. Lion PP Hugh Cowan gave a Happy $5 for being here—along with handing down or retiring his star studded Lions vest to Lion David Huntamer! Lion PP Mark Clifton gave a pink slip Happy Dollar donation for missing the Adopt a Street Cleanup that met at his workplace!

SPEAKER

Lion PP George Hurst introduced the Speaker Dr. Paul R. Swyhart who gave a very informative and entertaining presentation on “Is There Life After Marriage?” The re-sounding answer was Yes, Yes, Yes! Dr.Swyhart stated that Marriage is much more that a Contract—it is a Covenant between Man, Wife and God. Did you know that men think most about work, sports and sex! Women think most about relationships, things and sex!

ATTENDANCE DRAWING & CLOSING THOUGHTS

Attendance Drawing was won by Lion PP Hugh Cowan who re-donated his winnings to our City of Hope.

Glad to hear that Jennie Irey, wife of Lion Earl Irey, is out of the hospital and doing well!

Good to see Lion PP Hugh Cowan paying us a visit, wearing his star studded Lion vest and passing on his vest to Lion Dave Huntamer!

Great to see Lion PP Tom Normandie after a significant absence—we were all very happy to see you and hope you’ll be back soon!

Always good to see Lion Floyd Sorensen, Lion PP Mike Mortellaro and Lion PP Tom Hoban!

And don’t forget that Lions pin you wear on your collar represents that you belong to the greatest service organization in the world…the El Cajon Valley Host Lions Club “2011-2012 District 4L6 Large Lion Club of the Year!”
