PROGRAM:

Helix Water District updates from Michael Urhammer.

Helix Water District serves 277,000 households in East County.  CA has the most volatile weather in the country.  From 1999-2022 there have 4 wet, 5 average and 14 dry years with this year the driest ever recorded.  Lake Mead is at 27% and Lake Powell is at 25% of their respective capacities.  From 1888 to 2020 precipitation has gone from 36”+/- to 25”+/-.  There is a 91% of a La Nina through November and on through our winter weather system.

San Diego is in good shape through 2023 due to: water conservation, we have senior water rights from the Colorado river via the Imperial Water District, desalination, and potable reuse and, we can store more water.

We can all help to conserve by having hi efficiency toilets and washing machines, a flow monitoring device, weather-based irrigation controllers, use of the right sprinklers (rotating streams vs the old spray heads), drip irrigation and the removal of turf replaced with hedging/plants requiring less water.  All of the above have rebates from the district.  Go to hwd.com/sustainability for more detailed information.
