OPENING

A GREAT LION HAS FALLEN…BUT HIS COURAGE, HIS SPIRIT AND HIS LEGACY WILL LIVE ON FOR YEARS AND YEARS TO COME.  Lionism & the El Cajon Valley Lions have been deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Lion Past President Trent Huls who passed away on Sunday July 29, 2012.

Lion President Bill Sturgeon opened the meeting at 12:30pm. Lion PP Jerry Hollingsworth led the Opening Song with “God Bless America”. Pledge of Allegiance was proudly led by Lion 3rd VP Ray Ridlon. A stirring Prayer & Invocation was led by Lion PP Phil Smith. An Inspirational Helen Keller Quote of the Week was led by Lion PP Ron Snow “SECURITY IS MOSTLY A SUPERSTITION. IT DOES NOT EXIST IN NATURE…LIFE IS EITHER A DARING ADVENTURE OR NOTHING.”

GUESTS

Lion PP Ron Snow introduced his guest Greg Kelly who is in the automotive repair business. Lion Mike Raney introduced his guest Kerry Smith who was an outstanding LEO and recently graduated from High School—helped build our Lion Float past 3 years, one of our biggest LEO recruiters, loves to cook & great helper at the Lions Pancake Breakfasts, etc. Kerry is actively looking for work and can be reached at phone # 619.490.3351 for any job leads or opportunities.

CALENDAR ANNOUNCEMENTS

Lion PP Gary Robinson mentioned that the City of El Cajon Centennial will be having a Historical Past Speakers Series at the El Cajon Library 6:30-7:30pm. August 2nd  Eldonna Lay, Knox House Museum Curator, will speak on the exciting Homestead Act of 1862 and the effects of the Industrial Revolution on Post-Civil War settlement of El Cajon. August 16th Carroll Rice, writer, will share the story of The Lively Arts in El Cajon & the arrival of the Clark Family in 1911.

CAMP JACK HIGHLIGHTS

Lion PP Ray Hackworth profusely thanked our fellow Lions for the great turnout response for the Camp Jack Kickoff.  Five Lions & Friends of Lions that included Lion PP Dr. Mark Krause & Friend, Lion PP Gary Robinson and Lion PP Ray Hackworth did the “send off of 68 kids!”. Afternoon BBQ had plenty of Lions, Family & Friends help as Cooks, Servers, Greeters, etc. that included Lion Chief Cook Dick Nasif, Lion PP Ron Paris, Lion Sharie Hoops, Lion Arnold Martin, Lion Earl Irey & wife Jennie, Lion IPP Don Anthony, Lion Bob Acker & wife Susan, Lion PDG’s Len & Bucky Blottin, Lion PP Elmer Vierkant, Lion Roy “Rocco” Collura and Lion Paul Walters who took some great pics of the event.

VP REPORTS

Lion 3rd VP Ray Ridlon had Lion PP Gary Sims give an update on the “sold out” Lions “Day at the Races” in Del Mar on Friday August 3rd at 4pm. Lion Ray mentioned that the upcoming Lions Picnic will be on Sunday October 7th at Santee Lakes. This will be a Lions family event where the kids & grandkids are invites.

Lion 2nd VP Mercy Walters reported that the Lions “Adopt A Street Cleanup” went very well with our 6 Volunteers that included: Lion PP Gary Robinson, Lion PP Roger Stebleton, Lion Van Villsey, Lion Roy “Rocco” Collura, and Lion Paul & Mercy Walters.

Lion Treasurer Paul Tremblay reported that Budget Committee met last week and will present a draft budget at next Lions Board Meeting.

HAPPY DOLLARS

Lion PP Gary Sims, Tail Twister, collected a number of $1.00 fines for any Lions who were not wearing their Vests on the last meeting of each month. Other Happy Dollars & Happy Dollar Fines included: Lion Paul Walters Happy $5 for good time at Camp Jack, Lion Mike Raney Happy $20 for trip to Europe and meeting with son in Barcelona Spain, Lion PP Hugh Cowan Happy $20 for trip to Oregon to visit some “democrat friends”, Lion Ray Ridlon Happy $20 for fishing trip to June Lake with party of 29 family & friends and giving thanks for wife’s recent successful medical treatments, Lion PP Gary Sims Happy $20 for Vegas celebration of Lion PP Tom Hoban’s Big 60 Birthday—and having to put up his credit card  for the event!, Lion Sharie Hoops Happy $5 for Bob Acker who was “thrown under the bench” at Camp Jack!?, Lion IPP Don Anthony Happy $5 for a great time at Camp Jack, Lion PP Elmer Vierkant Happy $1 for the Camp Jack Experience, Lion Mike Wasyliw Happy $40 for 33rd Wedding Anniversary July 29th and having to miss Camp Jack to wine & dine the missus, Lion Paul Tremblay Happy $10 for grandson and celebrating his birthday last week with kids & family, Lion 2rd VP Mercy Walters Happy $5 for comfort & condolences to the Trent Huls Family.

SPEAKERS

Lion PP George Hurst, Speakers Program Chair, introduced SDSU Football Coach Danny Gonzalez who gave a glowing update of the Aztec Football Program. Highlights of talk included: SD State is on the verge of a Gold Mine, have won Bowl Games “back to back!” going from “Mt. West” to the “Big East” Division, SDSU is the place to go! #1 Thriving School in California, Future is very bright!—70,000 student applicants last year/looking at possible charter campuses with explosive growth, etc.  Thank You Coach Gonzalez for a very enlightening & informative presentation! Great to hear that we have a very large Lions SDSU Alumni who are very supportive of San Diego State!!
