PROGRAM:
Kimberly Taylor, Interim CEO and Director of Vision Rehabilitation Services at The San Diego Center for the Blind. The SDCB began in 1972 at the Blind Community Center on Upas. There are currently 2 facilities: the one on El Cajon Blvd and one in Vista.
Clients range from low vision to no vision. The most serious client Issues are macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
The center teaches independent living skills, rehab classes and counseling, technology classes, and safety when out and about on their own. There are approximately 150 clients between the two facilities and the center has limited outpatient services. They do have vans to transport clients to and from home.
The center has a store with high and low impact equipment for sale with profits going back to the center’s programs. The SDCB is a no-cost facility to clients and income is generated through grants, donations and some clients come via the Department of Rehabilitation. The latter clients can secure needed equipment paid for by the State. Most insurance does not cover items like the canes or equipment to assist with sight.
For more information or to book a tour of the center call or email Kimberly at 619/583-1542 X 125 or ktaylor@sdcb.org.
